Is it just us or did the Grammys red carpet 2024 feel a little…quiet? When it came to A-list celebrities, the likes Rihanna, Adele, Nicki Minaj and Ariana Grande were nowhere to be found, and even Taylor Swift was a question mark until the very last minute. (Swift, heading to Tokyo this week before next Sunday’s Super Bowl, was rumoured to be skipping the Grammys but walked the carpet just before the ceremony commenced — in custom Schiaparelli, no less!)

There were a few fashionable bright spots on the Grammys red carpet, led by Dua Lipa in custom Courreges, Olivia Rodrigo in vintage Versace circa 1995 and Caroline Polachek in Olivier Theyskens’ Fall 1998 collection. (Hat tip to beloved Instagram account Check the Tag for the vintage intel.)

Plus, a few mega stars bypassed the red carpet and slipped into the Grammys for the ceremony only. Case in point: Canadian treasure Céline Dion who wowed the crowd in a surprise on-stage appearance. The legendary songstress, who has been privately battling a neurological condition called stiff-person syndrome for the last couple of years, drew standing ovations and looked stunning in Valentino couture. Former FASHION cover star Law Roach even reportedly came out of retirement to style her for the moving moment.

Red carpet season is in full swing and there is no rest for the stylish. After the months-long Hollywood writers’ strike halted TV and film production and promotion, including awards shows, 2024 is shaping up to be a marathon of ceremonies. As of mid-January, we’ve already seen A-list stars on the red carpet at the Golden Globes, Governors Awards, Critics Choice Awards and most recently, the Emmys.

Postponed from September 2023, the Emmys 2024 red carpet took place on January 15 and stars from some of your favourite shows were in attendance. The case of The White Lotus was well-represented, with Aubrey Plaza standing out in a surrealist Loewe creation. Suki Waterhouse gave maternity wear a couture spin in red Valentino. And meanwhile, both Issa Rae and Jessica Chastain both wore fabulous fringed and feathered frocks that would look right at home on a dance floor.

The 2024 Critics Choice Awards red carpet was a sea of chic black and white looks, plus some welcome pops of colour. Hot on the heels of the star-studded 2024 Golden Globes and the fashion-forward Governors Awards, celebrities flocked once again to Los Angeles on January 14 for an evening of recognizing the year’s best performances in film and television.

While attendees like Emma Stone (one of the evening’s winners!) and Kaley Cuoco opted for classic black gowns, in Louis Vuitton and Dior respectively, there were some delightful fashion surprises. Barbie herself left the pink at home, with Margot Robbie choosing a rosette-adorned red gown from Balmain. Meanwhile, May December star Julianne Moore wore a rich purple Chanel gown, a colour choice co-signed by Oprah Winfrey.

There were striking menswear moments, too, with rising style stars Ayo Edebiri and Greta Lee wearing all-white The Row and head-to-toe black Loewe menswear respectively. Awards season is extremely back, my friends. Just look to star-studded and fashionable 2024 Golden Globes that took place on January 7. We’re barely recovered from the almost-painful beauty of Natalie Portman’s Dior Haute Couture (it was giving sequinned Monet) or Dua Lipa’s insane Schiaparelli (she apparently couldn’t sit it in, but worth it, IMO!), when here come to Governors Awards 2024.

This little awards show, which typically happens in the fall but was postponed due to the Hollywood writers’ strike, is more low-key than, say, the Globes or the Oscars, but celebrity stylists are working overtime this year to deliver look after look. And they weren’t sleeping on the job on January 9.

From Emily Blunt in a sleek Miu Miu gown complemented by a gargantuan Tiffany & Co. necklace (I weep) to Julianne Moore’s metallic Valentino and dainty Pandora lab-grown diamonds, the crème de la crème of Hollywood made it out for the 2024 Governors Awards — and looked chic doing it.

Awards season is back, baby! After a 2023 Hollywood strike that lasted 148 days, 2024 is starting with a star-studded — and stylish — bang. The 81st annual Golden Globes took place on January 7 in Los Angeles and the Golden Globes 2024 red carpet didn’t disappoint. Scarlet red and creamy neutrals were the colours of the evening, and strapless gowns seem to be making a strong return, but there was no lack of interesting embellishment, proportions and accessories among the looks.

Talent from television and movies are honoured at the Golden Globe awards, and despite almost half of 2023 having been impacted by the Hollywood strike, the pool of nominees was impressive with cult-favourite shows like Succession, and films including Barbie and Oppenheimer, raking in the most nominations.

A-list celebrities from Selena Gomez to Jennifer Lawrence strutted the red carpet in designs from Armani Privé and Dior Haute Couture respectively, while internet boyfriends like Saltburn anti-hero Barry Keoghan went bold with their menswear choices. The Irish breakout star looked impossibly cool in crimson Louis Vuitton, and Pedro Pascal wore a patterned Bottega Veneta turtleneck accessorized with an arm sling.

Rising stars like Priscilla’s Cailee Spaeny and The Bear’s Ayo Edebiri wore strapless Miu Miu and Prada creations, with the former opting for a sweetheart neckline and a full skirt and the latter going ’90s minimal in a column gown with a sleek mini-train (which looked chic, incidentally, when she collected the Golden Globe award for best actress in a TV musical or comedy).

Meanwhile, ladies of a certain age (that’s to say, 55 and over) slayed the red carpet, with stars like Gillian Anderson and Angela Bassett stunning in curve-hugging gowns from designers like Gabriela Hearst and Dolce & Gabbana.

When it comes to all that California has to offer, if you’re looking for a smoothie, you go to Erewhon. If you’re after foundational wardrobe pieces with a cool Scandinavian influence, you hit up Anine Bing.

The Denmark-born, Los Angeles-based former model and mother of two launched her eponymous brand alongside her husband Nicolai in 2012, and it swiftly became a go-to for fashion girlies craving chic European simplicity with a decidedly American ease — and edge. In fact, during our 20-minute Zoom chat, Bing mentioned “rock ’n’ roll” no less than seven times, revealing that prior to starting Anine Bing, she was actually in a band (!).

And while some of her label’s cult-status pieces, like band-inspired tees and distressed sweatshirts, could have gone the way of other fleeting trends in less seasoned hands, they’ve successfully become a core part of Bing’s polished edgy aesthetic which marries luxe materials and modern silhouettes with classic rockstar codes. Think: leather trousers with an oversized cashmere blazer or skinny denim with a silk blouse. (Yes, skinny jeans — but more on why they’re a wardrobe classic in a minute.)

Last month, Anine Bing opened her first brick-and-mortar store in Canada, a minimal-meets-cozy space in Toronto’s Yorkdale Shopping Centre, marking the brand’s 23rd store worldwide. FASHION chatted with the woman behind the brand about how to build a capsule wardrobe, why skinny jeans aren’t “out,” and what it’s like working with Kate Moss.

Congrats on opening your first Anine Bing store in Canada. What excites you most about this expansion?

Gosh, every time we open a new store, it’s exciting to me! Soon we’ll be at 25 stores around the world, and it’s so exciting every time. Canada has been a great market since I launched the brand 11 years ago. We have a lot of cool girls from Canada wearing the brand.

How would you define your personal style?

My own style is Scandinavian meets L.A. — I have taken what I love about Scandinavia, which is simplicity and the mindset that when you buy something, you invest in a good piece and then wear it year after year. And what I’ve taken then from living in L.A. for the past 20 years is a more rock ’n’ roll take on things, like the T shirts, the denim, the leather pieces. I think my own personal style is a good mix of Scandinavian simplicity with that American energy.

How do you feel when you see your Anine Bing designs on people?

I love it! It makes me so happy every time, no matter if it’s a big celebrity or a mom at school when I pick up my kids or a cool girl on the street. It makes me super proud and it fills me up with joy when somebody comes up and says thank you for creating these pieces.

Let’s talk about uniform dressing.

I love a uniform… Definitely a good blazer. I wear a blazer almost every day. And then I would have a cashmere turtleneck and a white T-shirt. Then maybe I’ll go more rock ’n’ roll, for the days I want to be a little more edgy, with a good pair of skinny jeans or straight denim. A leather jacket is also a good piece to have. If you have 10 good pieces, it goes a long way.

A post shared by ANINE BING (@aninebing)

You said skinny jeans would be part of your uniform. Are skinny jeans not “over”?

I’m wearing skinny jeans today (smiles). I like both [skinny jeans and looser denim], but skinny jeans feel a little bit more rock ’n’ roll. And I like that. When I launched my brand 11 years ago, skinny jeans was the only thing back then. They’re edgy and cool. And I think they’re here to stay.

You modelled prior to launching Anine Bing. How did that experience inform your brand?

I was modelling for many years. I started when I was 14, 15. And I travelled the world and lived in so many different places. So first of all, it gave me a work ethic, because building a company is a lot of work. It also [helped me] build a network of people, from photographers and makeup artists to stylists. I also got insight into the business from another side. So it gave me a combination of bravery — just going out into the world and doing something, like modelling — and then the opportunity to meet all the people that are really beneficial [to the brand] today.

The Anine Bing boutique in Toronto’s Yorkdale Shopping Centre. (Photography courtesy of Anine Bing)

Do you still have moments when that sense of bravery comes into play?

Yes, because you have to take risks all the time. And sometimes it’s a success and other times not. For example, before the company, I was in a band that made music. Even though I didn’t make it big as an artist, I still made an album and I still got to do things that made me happy. And the music industry inspired the rock ’n’ roll vibe of the brand.

How do you balance being a designer and a business owner, as well as a content creator?

You know, I don’t look at it [that way]. I know I have an Instagram and I have a big following, which was a huge advantage when I launched the brand 11 years ago. Today, I just share whatever I’m doing — often a little glimpse of my life, if I’m travelling, and so on. I also have a Leica camera and I love photography. And I always bring it with me everywhere. I like to share what I’m doing.

For me, the number one focus is driving the company forward. We have 200 people at headquarters, so there’s so much going on all the time. That is really where my focus is.

Photography courtesy of Anine Bing

Tell me about building Anine Bing while raising two kids.

I just love being a mom. It’s the most fulfilling thing in life. And I love being able to do that alongside building this company. Me and my husband started this company together and still work together. [Our children] see us working really hard and hopefully we inspire them to follow their dreams one day.

You’ve expanded into products like jewellery and handbags. Is there a category you would like to enter in the future?

We have just scratched the surface of handbags. I love handbags and I really want to put more focus and energy into that category and build something strong.

It’s a category that we haven’t tapped into at all, but I love, love beauty products and makeup. It’s not in the plan, but I love it, so who knows.

Photography courtesy of Anine Bing

Finally, Kate Moss is the face of the brand. What is it like working with Kate Moss?

She is such an icon. She’s been on every mood board [of mine] since forever. And her style is perfect. Effortless. So chic. So rock ’n’ roll. When she walked into the studio in New York for the first shoot we did together, it was so much fun. It felt so surreal, but like it was meant to be as well. It was just such a cool moment.

And she’s so professional; she walks in front of the camera and delivers the photo in a couple of minutes. There’s a reason why she’s killing it — she’s amazing. And the Kate Tote is named after her because it’s an effortless, mature bag. She left the set with the tote because she loved it so much.

After a wildly successful year of breaking industry records, Taylor Swift has left the world wondering if there’s anything she can’t do. Predictably, the internet has a slightly out-of-pocket answer: Fashion is her flaw. According to many Swifties and non-Swifties alike, she can write “Style” and “Dress,” but she cannot style a dress. Or a skirt. Or a blouse. Or anything.

Some have even taken it as far as formally diagnosing her with an inability to serve. But before we pick apart every pleated skirt or misguided belt, let’s put ourselves in her inappropriately-styled Aquazzura heels (you know, the one’s she paired with a denim mini-dress, below): Maybe Taylor’s lacklustre fashion sense is a masterclass in branding and maintaining relatability.

As mentioned, Taylor Swift has had a really good year. In 2023, she released two re-recorded albums, produced the highest grossing tour of all time, became a billionaire, and was even named Time Magazine’s Person of the Year. This latest achievement had everyone discussing the photoshoot where the blonde superstar donned a Bardot bodysuit, a red lip, and her ragdoll cat, Benjamin Button.

While some took the opportunity to offer praise, others declared her boring and unfashionable. In fact, even the most devout stans can’t help but fantasize about a more fashion-forward Taylor, with this Swiftie photoshopping better outfits onto the star for an audience of ten thousand followers, and growing.

But Taylor Swift doesn’t need to be fashion-forward or trendy to make her mark on the world — that’s what her music and business acumen is for. And as she rises to new heights in popularity and economic status, nothing would be worse for her relatable image than a hard pivot towards a more polished, high fashion aesthetic.

To most fans, Taylor’s appeal lies in her ability to capture the heart of girlhood, a silly, playful space where one is invited to “try on” everything. We try on relationships and ideals, careers and ambitions, and, yes, we try on clothes. Lots and lots of clothes. And what could be more relatable than an outfit that doesn’t quite work?

Touring, awards, and other social engagements have made for a variety of cute yet, underwhelming, and — at times — shockingly affordable Taylor ’fits in 2023. Points were made when she: paired a cool coat with a truly basic outfit in the form of the denim trench coat over a long-sleeved russet dress; mixed aesthetics with biker shorts and frilly socks (above); and played it safe in a black bodysuit with baggy, mid-rise trousers (below).

Her fashion sense is unambiguously simple, neither minimalist nor fitting into any of the “cores” online. This didn’t change where new beau, Travis Kelce, is concerned, as shown through Taylor’s adorable Kansas City Chiefs sweatshirt paired with a pleated skirt.

Most of us can relate to this desire to both make a statement and fit in at the same time. And most of us can also relate to sometimes missing the mark. This belted Aritzia dress, for example, seemed to be the last straw for a Tiktoker who used the image to gently question Taylor’s styling capability.

But this is simply the other side of her relatable appeal.

Fans are comfortable guiding Taylor’s fashion sense in addition to seeing their own potential in her choices. Whether it’s criticizing her birthday look by listing off better options or lightly roasting her outfits with comparisons to the Ikea monkey, Taylor’s fans humble her with humour.

Alternatively, her usually affordable style allows them to recreate her outfits and purchase the same pieces she’s pictured with, like this Aupen handbag (above) and her affinity for Reformation boots. Even Travis has been pulled into the mythology of relatability, with fans likening their combined aesthetics to Luke and Lorelai of Gilmore Girls. And don’t get me started on the literal copycat styling techniques popular on TikTok right now where users mimic her Time Magazine shoot by wearing their house cats around their necks.

Through her fashion choices, Taylor Swift remains aspirational yet attainable without ever coming across as “above” the average fan. Her unpretentious nature combined with a few bold swings and misses like her Eras Tour movie premiere look make her more relatable than any polished and perfect celebrity could ever dream of being. And maybe that’s the point.

What if I told you that I, Jennifer Berry, a fashion-obsessed, Champagne-sipping, certified pain au chocolat aficionado waited an appalling four decades before visiting Paris, France for the first time? If you said that feels like a crime, I’d agree.

I’ve watched and rewatched Amelie. I was obsessed with the Paris episodes of Sex and the City. (“I came all the way from New York to squat and scoop in Dior!” IYKYK.) I grew up in Montreal, pour l’amour de Dieu! Where did I go wrong? This fall, I finally visited the City of Light and it will surprise no one that Paris was worth the wait.

Photography by Jennifer Berry

Obviously, the thing that excited me most about Paris was the outfits. I mean the culture! OK, both. What better place to take your most elegant (and sometimes extra) ensembles for a spin than the cobblestone streets of Paris? But I didn’t do Paris like a 20-something backpacker. Mais non. I waited my whole life for this and got to do it right, travelling to the European epicentre of food and culture cosplaying as an Amex Platinum cardmember.

That meant skating through security at Toronto’s Pearson airport and going straight to the Plaza Premium Lounge to enjoy some fancy cheese and Prosecco. (Who knew how calm international travel could be when you’re not being elbowed in line at an airport Starbucks?) Living life like a Platinum girlie also meant access to the chicest Fine Hotels + Resorts with perks like 4PM late checkout, daily breakie for two and $100 USD hotel benefit, all of which I got to use at Paris’ Prince de Galles hotel. A hundred cold ones I can use for stuff like room service? Say less!

As a luxury-loving Taurus whose life basically revolves around treating herself, but who has only ever passively collected travel points on a credit card (or really paid much attention at all to the benefits my trusty piece of plastic offers me), using these kinds of credit card perks was kind of… mind-blowing? But I’ll get to the 12-course two-Michelin star meal I enjoyed, arranged by Amex’s 24/7 concierge, soon. (And yes, my outfit was a 10/10.)

Here’s my guide on how to plan a trip to Paris and have the absolute best first time in the French capital, without feeling stress about doing it all — because as soon as you visit Paris once, you start planning your return trip. Bon voyage!

Take in some culture

You will feel pressure to visit approximately 3,537 museums and galleries when in Paris, but don’t let the abundance of artsy hotspots stress you out! My advice? Pick a couple, book them in advance if possible (trust me, they fill up super fast so reserving your time slot is the move), and try to really enjoy the moments instead of rushing to another museum.

In my few days as a Parisienne, I was treated to a private tour of the Louvre with one of the museum’s curators, with the help of Amex Travel & Lifestyle Consultants who help cardmembers arrange these kinds of once-in-a-lifetime experiences. The sprawling museum was as busy as people say it will be (pro tip: if you’re feeling a bit germ-shy since the pandemic, bring a mask), but that didn’t stop our impressive tour guide from pointing out some of the most iconique works. (Yes, I saw *her* but I was almost more tickled to see the selfie-taking Apollo, which Beyoncé famously posed in front of in 2014.)

After touring the Louvre, make time to stroll around the nearby Jardin des Tuileries (you know, where all the stylish girlies are snapped during fashion week). I was lucky enough to catch a special Art Basel installation.

I also visited the stunning Galerie Dior, which more than scratched my fashion itch with its collection of historical Dior works, ranging from archival Christian Dior creations from the 1950s to iconic gowns last seen on the Oscars red carpet (like Nicole Kidman’s chartreuse Galliano-era Dior!).

For more art and fashion, the Musée Yves Saint Laurent is a quick and easy tour in the chic 8th arrondissement, while fashion designer Azzedine Alaïa’s personal clothing collection, full of couture treasures from Madame Grès, Paul Poiret, Cristobal Balenciaga and more, is on display at the Palais Galleria until January 21, 2024. Plus, the Fondation Louis Vuitton has a Mark Rothko exhibit on until February 2024.

Do some touristy stuff

My approach when visiting a city with as much history as Paris and so many tourist attractions is to do less. Now, I don’t mean rot in your hotel. But running yourself ragged from the 1st to the 14th arrondissement and back again trying to see every. single. thing. is the fastest way to feel stressed (and blistered). Remember: This is a vacation. Do as the French do and take things at a leisurely pace.

I don’t have to tell you to visit the Eiffel tower (she’s an icon!), but I will say that one stunning way to meet her is while sipping a flute of bubbles on the Seine river. As seen in the main image of this very article, it was there that I ascended to my purest self. I was fortunate enough to do so aboard a private boat with handsome French cater waiters, so consider a private tour if you have a group. Otherwise, join the masses on one of the bigger cruise boats. It’s a delight!

Shop (the right way)

Shopping in one of the most stylish fashion capitals of the world? Groundbreaking. But if you love fashion and consider “spending money” a hobby (be honest), Paris is the place to do it. A few spots I would recommend include malls like the Galeries Lafayette and the newly revamped Art Deco wonder, La Samaritaine, both stacked with cool brands and *vibes.* (Pharrell Williams staged his first Louis Vuitton presentation just steps from the LVMH-owned Samaritaine on the Pont Neuf.)

You can find cool shops, designer havens and vintage wonders on nearly every street, but I felt particularly at home browsing on the Champs-Élysées, Avenue Montaigne and Rue de Faubourg Saint-Honoré. Le Marais neighbourhood is definitely the cooler younger sister of the city, home to cult-favourite boutiques like Merci and beloved French brands like Sézane.

La Samaritaine. (Photography by Jennifer Berry)

If I can offer one piece of must-follow advice when it comes to shopping in Paris, it’s this: Take advantage of the VAT refund! Don’t be like me (honestly, I might get my magazine editor licence revoked for this admission), and FORGET YOUR I.D. when shopping, only to miss out on a $50 refund for the Ganni bag you bought. Some retail locations, like La Samaritaine, process your VAT refund on the spot, too, so you don’t have to line up at the airport. C’est geniale!

Eat somewhere spectacular and somewhere you can cosplay as a local

In all my days, I never imagined I’d sit down in a literal ballroom to enjoy a four-hour, 12-course meal by a two-Michelin star chef, but this was clearly a bucket list trip. Everything from flavoured foam to fine fromage was had at Le Meurice Alain Ducasse, and there was not just a bread and a cheese cart, but a Champagne cart, too. I have tears in my eyes just thinking about it.

Aside from having at least one extravagant dining moment while in Paris, I’d recommend two other crucial eating experiences. Firstly, you must park you derriere in one of those street-facing outdoor seats at a bistro and have a glass of wine. (It’s mandatory for all Paris tourists, I don’t make the rules.) Next, try to find a cozy restaurant off the beaten path where you can feel a teensy bit like a local. For me, this was a solo dinner at the bar — THE BEST — of Le Mary Celeste in the Marais, a recommendation from my sister-in-law who had recently eaten there multiple times in a few days. The vibes were immaculate.

Get your beauty fix

Paris might be best-known for its art, food and fashion, but make no mistake, it is a destination par excellence when it comes to beauty pampering. Fancy a French facial? The Dior spa is brand-new and beyond beautiful, while the Biologique Recherche spa has reached cult status. Want to freshen up you hair before a chic night out? No one does a blowout quite like a French hairdresser. My temporary Platinum cardmember status meant the hotel’s concierge could help me book one locally, and I was sitting at the shampoo station faster than you could say “tout de suite.”

Firstly, I’ve never had a hair wash quite like this one. An older French woman with an outwardly stern way but kind eyes gave me a live-affirming double cleanse with the most divine-smelling products, then whisked me away to a chair where a magician named Nicolas was finishing the classic French “brushing” of an elderly client. (Did I assume she has a standing appointment to have her hair set weekly? Of course.) After complimenting my hair colour — my proudest moment? — Nicolas swiftly whipped my thick, semi-coarse mane into an immaculate ’90s blowout using little more than a blowdryer and a small round brush, curtain bangs curved to perfection. Heat tools? Paris doesn’t know her.

A fragrance-making workshop. (Photography by Jennifer Berry)

Make something

Hear me out: The best souvenir is something you took part in making. For me, that was a fragrance workshop at the most charming private residence where a professional perfumer (“un nez”) took us through how to mix different notes to create our dream perfume. Mine smelled of amber and musk and reminds me of my Paris self every time I spritz it.

Other bespoke activities include a stop at Timeless Pearly, the viral charm-focused jewellery mecca where you can choose your baubles and get a custom necklace or pair of earrings, and a visit to a local apothecary like Officine Universelle Buly where you can make your own soaps, fragrances and lip balms.

The view from Cafe de L’Homme (Photography by Jennifer Berry)

Just say oui

A private, Amex cardmembers-only electronic music party in the Louvre after a dinner at Café de L’Homme, so close to the glittering Eiffel Tower, you felt like you could touch her? Say less! Sweating through my silver pants while listening to cute DJs like Kungs and Kavinsky in the basement of the world’s most famous museum was not on my 2023 Bingo card, but it was fabulous.

Have you been missing the over-the-top fashion of movie premieres and awards season red carpets? With the Hollywood strike forcing stars off of most red carpets throughout the late summer and fall, we’ve been starved for high-octane glamour. And we can’t be the only ones: Now that a tentative deal has been struck and promotion has picked back up, celebrities have been jumping at the chance to serve looks. Just look at Zendaya in fresh-off-the-runway Schiaparelli at a comic convention in Brazil, Timothée Chalamet giving Wonka, or the scores of high fashion at the 2023 Academy Museum Gala on December 3? From Jodie Turner-Smith in Christopher John Rogers to Kaia Gerber in Celine, we’re being spoiled and for that, we’re grateful.

The British Fashion Awards 2023 looks that walked the December 4 red carpet continued to deliver some of the most fun fashion we’ve seen in a minute. Eternal British style muse Alexa Chung was holiday-ready in 16Arlington, Anne Hathaway was resplendent in vintage Valentino and Canadian fashion darling Taylor Russell made a 3D Loewe creation look effortless. FASHION’s own winter cover star Lucien Laviscount of Emily in Paris fame proved that dudes can have just as much fun on the red carpet in a double-breasted Dolce & Gabbana vest look, while Pamela Anderson (also a recent FASHION cover star!) continued her commitment to embracing her natural beauty by going makeup-free.

Here, we round up some of the most exciting 2023 British Fashion Awards looks that walked the red carpet.

Few things bring more sartorial joy than a fresh pair of boots for fall. Maybe it’s the fact that crisp new footwear in the autumn months conjures feelings of back-to-school nostalgia, perhaps it’s how a killer pair of knee-high boots elevates most outfits, but damn it if it isn’t a fashion high I’ve been chasing since I slipped into my first pair of Cougars from Junior Booty in the second grade. (Yes, this was the name of my local mall’s kids shoe mecca growing up in Montreal.)

A lot older and a little wiser — and with a few more dollars to my name than my weekly allowance — boots remain one of my favourite things to purchase. But the boots I gravitate towards tend to be… on the ridiculously expensive side. We’re talking boots like the Toteme croc ones and the Khaite Davis. In a word: unattainable.

So what’s a girl to do if she has Caviar Kaspa taste on a charcuterie board budget? Peruse the offerings of mid-priced brands like Ganni, Staud and Reformation, the sustainably minded cool-girl label best known for doling out coquettish dresses covered in micro floral patterns, that’s what. When I tried Ref’s boots in 2019 shortly after they launched footwear — a stunnin’ pair of black croc mid-shaft babies with a square toe and stacked heel with slightly curved edges, thanks for asking — I knew it was over for me. More than four years later, they’re still in heavy rotation and estimating that I’ve worn them at least 30 times per year, that makes their initial $400 price tag more or less free. #GirlMath.

Now, budget-friendliness is completely subjective and upwards of $600 for footwear is undeniably pricey. But in the spirit of buying less and better, I’ve been attempting to dodge my usual fast-fashion spots in favour of well-made alternatives that cost more but will last longer. (After all, a pair of genuine leather Zara boots that costs $150 to $250 will last you two seasons while the right pair that’s $500 or more can last… a lifetime? With the right care, here’s hoping.)

I’m not the only one who’s into Ref’s boots — the Reformation Remy boots have been going viral on social media for their tantalizing square-ish toe, high shaft and array of lush quiet luxury-inspired colours. So, I set off to do the lord’s work and take a few of the brand’s most sought-after styles for a spin to rate them on sizing, comfort, versatility, and value. (And pssst: Almost everything at Ref is 25% off for Black Friday, so it’s a good time to pull the trigger on your wish list items — after you study our editor-approved shopping tips, of course.)

Remy knee boot

Fit: I sized up a half size to 8.5 from my usual 8 in order to have room for cozy socks and I’m so glad I did. I could have gotten away with my typical size but I’m glad to have a teeny bit more room.

Calf width: The appearance of a wider calf, for me, was the biggest appeal of the Reformation Remy boot when I drooled over them online. Naturally, I wondered if the models just had slender calves and I was right — I’d say the calf width on this style is normal. Not overly snug, but certainly not as spacious as, say, the aforementioned Totemes. To be fair, it’s noted right on the details that “Customers say this style hugs the calf” and it’s accurate.

Comfort: 9.5/10, easily. Truly excellent. The two-inch kitten heel is super walkable, the snip toe means no pinky pinching and the leather is structured enough that the boot stays up nicely while still supple so that they don’t feel stiff. I wore my moss green-coloured pair for an office day complete with round trip commute *and* an evening cocktail party and felt little more than fatigue.

Pairs well with: A silk slip skirt and cashmere sweater in earthy tones, accessorized with a Jennifer Lawrence-approved headband for a demure ensemble. Or give it your Scandi-girl best in leggings, a boxy oversized blazer and sculptural jewellery.

Value: These aren’t cheap but they are pretty spectacular when considering both aesthetics and comfort, not to mention overall quality which is decidedly luxe. While I adore my greenish brown Remys, my one regret with these boots is that I didn’t go for an even more classic colour. I’ve got a pair of black leather ones in my Black Friday shopping cart, just waiting to pull the trigger.

Shop Now

Rosemary knee boot

Fit: Like the Remy, I tried a half size larger here and again, I was pleased I did. While I’d qualify the Rosemary as true to size, they feel slightly more narrow because of the pointed toe and I like to err on the side of having a bit more room rather than less.

Calf width: If a bit of a wider calf is what you’re after, these are a solid option as they hug the calf quite a bit less than the Remy. Plus, with the slightly higher shaft in the front offers a bit more space.

Comfort: 8/10. At about three inches high, the heel is still quite manageable, but it is more of a skinny stiletto shape, so I couldn’t pound the pavement with these all day without a little ache.

Pairs well with: A knit maxi-dress and long scarf coat with red accessories, or tucked-in straight-leg denim and a cropped jacket. Suede boots are so lush for fall, so marrying them with any multi-textured outfit iteration is an immediate chef’s kiss!

Value: Suede is quite trendy right now, as is latte dressing, but it’s worth considering that both suede and the colour brown are also classics. If a pointed-toe boot is something you’re missing in your wardrobe, these are a stylish choice.

Shop Now

River knee boot

Fit: Again, I’d call these cherry-hued boots true to size while noting that I tried a half-size bigger than my usual shoe size and am delighted to have space for wooly tights or thick socks, should the conditions call for them.

Calf width: The calf room on this pair of boots is comparable to the Remy — it hugs slightly but isn’t tight. If anything, I’d say the River has sliiiiiiightly more room, as in you could squeeze a pair of skinny jeans into them.

Comfort: 8.5/10. Like the Rosemary, the River has a three-inch heel but since this baby is a sturdy block heel, they’re much more sidewalk-proof.

Pairs well with: A denim miniskirt and cozy cream cardigan. Just add a ruby red lip for a cheeky pop of colour.

Value: Of the bunch, a red boot probably feels like the most fleeting trend, but when iterated in a crisp knee-high boot with a chic nipped square toe and graduated block heel, the of-the-moment colour gets some serious mileage.

Mango patent leather-effect heeled boots

Somehow, at press time these marked-down shiny leather boots from Mango are fully stocked so I’d run to the cash register. Patent leather is so easy to clean (hello, wet cloth) and the slightly squared-off toe feels unxpected.

By Anthropologie knee-high pointed-toe boots

Snakeskin boots are practically a neutral and this rusty pattern feels fresh. The low heel looks manageable, not to mention the style comes in five different colours/textures. Plus, these boots are available in standard or wide width which makes finding your perfect size easier.

Ganni slouch high shaft boot

I’ve seen these boots IRL and can confirm the shaft is majorly roomy, if that exaggerated look the Scandi girlies rock so effortlessly is what you’re after. Bonus: They have a modest two-inch heel so you could justify the purchase by assuming you’ll be able to wear them 24/7.

Everlane knee-high banana heel boot

The curved heel on these boots gives Khaite but at a more palatable price tag. They come in black and brown leather and if the website images are any guide, look super chic under a midi-skirt.

By Far Stevie 42 boots

The slim shaft and slightly rounded pointy toe on these boots winks at the ’90s in the most fun way. Just add a going out top and you’ll be ready for New Year’s Eve.

The subtle Western detailing at the top of the shaft makes these suede boots a chic, streamlined alternative to a full-on cowboy boot, and the caramel colour will accessorize your rich fall knits beautifully.

This article was first published in May 2023 and has been updated.

It’s no secret that alcohol consumption can have negative effects on our health, including an increased risk of cancer and heart disease, and we’ve all heard the saying “everything in moderation.” But have you ever wondered just how much is considered “moderation” when it comes to cocktails? Well, as even the most casual of drinkers surely knows, the Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction (CCSA) addressed this by updating their guidelines for alcohol consumption last spring and according to this update, no amount of alcohol is safe.

That said, if you *must* imbibe, the CCSA recommends no more than two drinks a week and cautions that consuming three to six drinks a week can increase the likelihood of developing certain types of cancer. In addition, having more than seven drinks per week increases the risk of heart disease and stroke, with the risk increasing with each additional drink. Dark.

Now that holiday party season has kicked off, what do these stringent guidelines mean for your hot girl winter? Or more specifically, if you like to enjoy a drink or two, how can you cut down on booze and still socialize at your leisure? One practical place to start is opening your mind (and palate) to non-alcoholic alternatives to your go-to Aperol Spritz, like flavoured soda waters and booze-free bevvies.

FASHION spoke to Andrea Grand, co-founder of sparkling beverage brand Barbet, about how drinking habits and increased awareness around the health risks of alcohol may change in the wake of the rigid CCSA guidelines. “It creates more opportunities! We’re still a baby brand, but even in our short [time] of being around, we’ve seen a shift in the conversation around beverage menus at restaurants and the need for diverse and different products,” she says.

Here, Grand shares her top tips for navigating the social scene this holiday season, whether you’re trying a “damp lifestyle” or going entirely booze-free. Grab a mocktail and read on.

You don’t have to take an “all or nothing” approach

Thinking about attempting Dry January 2024 and want to go sober-curious for a period of time? Do what feels right for you — dry, damp, or anything in between,” Grand says. “These are opportunities to break the rituals or habits you’re in, make small changes and reassess how things are going. It’s about making choices that are right for you,” she says of deciding how much to cut down on drinking, and for how long. “It’s like the book Choose Your Own Adventure.”

Get out of the house

“Don’t hermit — get out and about! There are so many fun things to do that aren’t centred around alcohol,” Grand tells FASHION, adding that a damp lifestyle (a.k.a. one where you drink sometimes and not others) is about balance. “Next time you need to grab a drink with friends, you can always opt for a non-alcoholic beverage or elevated sparkling water instead. It’s the same experience, but without the consequences.”

Photography by Bianka Gill, courtesy of Barbet

It’s not your responsibility to explain why you’re not drinking

“The main thing is to own it!” says Grand. “It is no one’s business if you are or aren’t drinking.” Grand adds that it’s a priority of Barbet’s to “start getting people to focus on what’s in a person’s can or cup, not what isn’t.”

Entertaining? Level up your non-booze options

Grand says that a surefire way to make guests feel more comfortable when they aren’t drinking is to offer elevated cocktail alternatives. “We don’t mean offering up a pop/soda you would sip on when you were sitting at the kid’s table or a margarita but with no tequila. We mean options that are just as flavourful, bold, playful, appetizing and high-quality as their alcohol counterparts.”

Now, try a tasty non-alcoholic drink recipe:

Barbet x Seedlip “Grove Waves”

3oz Barbet Light Wave

1.5oz Seedlip Grove 42

0.5oz Mango Mint Cordial

0.75oz Fresh-pressed lemon

Dehydrated lemon garnish

Cheers!

The 2023 Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) Awards took place in New York City on November 6 and the red carpet was stacked with stars — and style. And I don’t know about you, but my eyes were craving beauty (and glamour) so the stylish CFDA Awards 2023 were a welcome respite from the realities of the present moment.

With fashion designers, celebs, industry movers and shakers, and rising style stars in attendance at the American Museum of Natural History, the CFDA 2023 red carpet was a treat.

Hosted by none other than Anne Hathaway, who reportedly stepped in at the last minute when Sarah Jessica Parker had to pull out of hosting duties, the evening honoured the top American talent in design, styling and personal style. Among the winners was Catherine Holstein, the designer behind cult-favourite brand Khaite, won the coveted Womenswear Designer of the Year Award for the second year in a row. Holstein reigned victorious in a seriously impressive group of nominees including Luar, Altuzarra, Christopher John Rogers, and Tory Burch.

Ashley Olsen and Mary-Kate Olsen took home the American Accessory Designer of the Year honour for The Row, while Rachel Scott for Diotima was awarded American Emerging Designer of the Year. (One to watch, indeed.)

Kim Kardashian presented the Fashion Icon award to her friend Serena Williams, while Goop took home the Innovation Award presented by Amazon Fashion that Skims snagged in 2022. Meanwhile, International Designer of the Year went to Jonathan Anderson for J.W. Anderson and Loewe.

The fashion industry, and its related events, can get a bad rap for being cold, competitive and exclusive. This was decidedly not the case at the 2023 Canadian Arts and Fashion Awards on October 14. Hosted by drag superstar (and friend of FASHION) Brooke Lynne Hytes, the CAFA Awards 2023 gala was everything movies about fashion tell us the industry isn’t: loving, encouraging, inclusive. And really, really fun.

Marking its 10-year anniversary, the 2023 CAFAs celebrated the best talent in Canadian fashion design, styling and more, and what the attendees observed was a room full of colleagues and peers cheering each other on with unabashed pride. From Jully Black’s stirring speech to present a Changemaker Award to Knix founder Joanna Griffiths (which prompted a ballroom-wide standing ovation) to Heather Diamond Strongarm’s emotional win for the Fresh Face of the Year Award bestowed upon an up-and-coming Canadian model, we loved to see the camaraderie and genuine emotion that permeated the room. (And the Canadian fashion, of course.) Read on for some of the evening’s most heartwarming highlights and jaw-dropping style moments.

Listen, keeping a room full of hungry, thirsty fashion people entertained for a solid three hours is no easy feat. And the former Drag Race contestant made it look downright easy. From the gag-worthy wardrobe changes (I lost count at eight ensembles, each one more snatched than the last) and the flawlessly executed Devil Wear’s Prada-inspired opening skit and the cheeky jokes, Hytes had the audience enraptured. 10/10 no notes!

The former April 2023 FASHION cover star accepted the Vanguard Award from the iconic Joe Zee with a speech that was poignant and funny — and entirely ad libbed. (We could see the teleprompter — she was indeed blank!) James, who is the creative director/founder of Brother Vellies and a vice-chair member of the CFDA, founded the non-profit advocacy organization the Fifteen Percent Pledge in 2020 as a call to action challenging companies to commit to increased diversity and representation. “I founded the Fifteen Percent Pledge three years ago to create greater equity for Black entrepreneurs,” said James. “Since then, we’ve signed on 29 Pledge takers– some of the biggest retailers across fashion, beauty, and the design space– and are in the process of reallocating nearly $14 billion in revenue to Black founders. This work isn’t easy, but it is very important.”

Lauren Chan’s homecoming

Photography by George Pimentel

Decked out head to toe in the colour of the moment, red, Canada’s beloved Lauren Chan (and one time FASHION intern!) drew hearty cheers when her win for Model of the Year was announced. The newly minted Sports Illustrated model, Hening founder, and inclusive fashion champion noted in her acceptance speech that it took her years to even refer to herself as a model (“I always put a moniker, like ‘plus-size,’ in front of it,” she said), adding “That insecurity can really be boiled down to the fact that I do not look like what I grew up seeing as the beauty ideal in fashion,” calling the award a sign of “progress.”

There were a few misty eyes in the Fairmont Royal York ballroom when designer Dorian Who accepted the award for Emerging Talent, Fashion, presented by Meredith Shaw. “This country gave me freedom of expression and inspired me to create my own brand. To be the voice for the oppressed and to give courage to women that their dreams are possible no matter how crazy they seem,” the designer said of her move to Canada in 2015.

And the award for most creative ensemble goes to… Sarain Fox in Canada Goose

Anishinaabe activist and storyteller Sarain Fox introduced the 2023 Outstanding Achievement Award which president and vice-chairman of the Toronto Raptors, Masai Ujiri, presented to Canada Goose CEO Dani Reiss. And she did so decked out in a white quilted gown that was indeed comprised of two Canada Goose parkas zipped together — plus a few nips and tucks here and there. “I had to hand sew all of the alterations in my hotel room just hours before the show began,” Fox writes in an Instagram caption. “I think that was my favourite part. Once upon a time clothes and fashion were my full time, so it was a good reminder of that dream.”

Below, we round up some of the best-dressed attendees and honourees at the 2023 CAFAs — and trust us, it was hard to pick.

Fashion month marches (er, struts) on in Paris and we’re saying “oui” to the PFW street style Spring 2024 looks outside the shows.

If the sidewalks in Milan were defined by head to toe leather and lingerie-inspired dressing (and that viral suede Prada blazer), we’re seeing a strong showing of eclectic street wear, deconstructed denim and graphic tees in the City of Light. In news surprising no one, shades of red, from cherry to bordeaux, are absolutely everywhere. We’ve even spotted a couple of non-ironic berets. Très cute!

Hot on the heels of the presentations in Milan, where brands like Boss brought business attire back into the spotlight and Claudia Schiffer made a triumphant return to the Versace runway, is a jam-packed Paris Fashion Week Spring 2024 schedule. Buzzy labels like Christopher Esber and Paloma Wool are set to make their PFW debuts, while Rabanne (formerly Paco Rabanne) will present its first collection under its new identity.

After showing his first collection as creative director of Helmut Lang in New York earlier this month to mixed reviews, Peter Do will present under his namesake label in Paris, while the date of Phoebe Philo’s comeback is finally confirmed for October 30, weeks after Paris Fashion Week wraps.

Check out the gallery below for all of the fashionable PFW street style Spring 2024 (and check back in for updates as Paris Fashion Week unfolds).

Stuart Vevers is the kind of fashion insider who could be… inaccessible. A true industry veteran, Vevers, who recently marked 10 years at the helm of Coach, cut his teeth at Calvin Klein in New York after leaving his hometown of Yorkshire, England to study fashion design in London. What followed was tenures at some of the most sought-after labels, including Bottega Veneta, Mulberry, and Loewe, where he honed a mastery in accessories and a knack for creating creating fly-off-shelves It items, like the iconic Emmy bag from Mulberry that once hung nonstop from Kate Moss‘s supermodel arm.

RELATED: Julia Fox Is a Campy Bride + Other Standout Moments From NYFW

And at Coach, where he has held the position of creative director since September 2013, Vevers has steered the classic American brand in new directions — and into new wardrobes — by expanding the legendary accessories label’s apparel offerings and authentically reaching increasingly younger generations. (This is no accident — read on to learn about Vevers’ respect for the “next” generation.)

So, you see, Vevers could be somewhat affected by his decades of acclaim. Instead, the man who joins me on Zoom on a 35-degree September day in New York is warm, fully engaged in the conversation and generous with his responses, not to mention his time (the runway presentation for Coach’s Spring 2024 collection was just a few hours later, on the eve of New York Fashion Week‘s official Spring 2024 calendar). We related almost immediately over the concept of crafting clothes for a club kid lifestyle (his at English clubs, my fiancé’s at Toronto raves) and I quickly understood some of the ingredients to Vever’s success: He’s kind. And humble. And deeply connected to both family and history — that of his upbringing (his father attended his first fashion show ever that evening); that of Coach (he speaks with reverence about the brand’s archives and its roots in New York City); and that of his own family (he took a bow at the end of Coach’s Spring 2024 show that evening with his toddler son in his arms).

A post shared by Coach (@coach)

It was poetic, then, that Vevers staged his 10-year anniversary collection presentation at the New York Public Library, where so many stories are housed. There, famous faces like Jennifer Lopez and Lil Nas X gathered with editors, buyers and tastemakers to watch the Spring 2024 show where leather bowling bags and mini totes shaped like ducks dangled off the arms of models of different genders and sizes.

The collection, full of signature oversized leather jackets, fresh knit dresses, elevated suiting and leather slips, and which didn’t include a single high heel, if memory serves, felt reflective of the next generation that Vevers fondly speaks of — cool, a little edgy and entirely uninterested in dusty old rules. At a dinner after the presentation, an emotional Vevers reflected on his decade at Coach and what keeps him loving his work after all these years: “Fashion should be about joy, about celebration and, to paraphrase my hero Keith Haring, it should be for everyone.”

Photography courtesy of Coach

Here, get to know Coach creative director Stuart Vevers a little better, plus take a peek at highlights from the designer’s 10-year anniversary presentation.

Where did your interest in fashion initially came from?

That’s a great question. My grandmother was an amateur costume designer and made costumes for the amateur dramatic shows in her town, and she would always dress me and my brother and cousins up to go see her shows. There was something there; it wasn’t exactly fashion but she was creative and always making things. And I adored her. So she was my first inspiration.

Photography courtesy of Coach

I grew up in a relatively small city in the U.K., far from [any kind of ] fashion capitals. My parents didn’t go to college, so I grew up in a traditional working class family environment and I wasn’t exposed to [fashion]. But I was tall from quite a young age, so I could get into nightclubs from about 15. I started dressing up and my grandmother, who was a wizard on the machine, would help me make some of my clubbing outfits. That’s when I started to look at magazines and books around style. But even at that point, I don’t think I ever dreamt I would become a designer.

I was always as a kid drawing, painting. So it wasn’t that long until I realized that [fashion’s] where I wanted to go. But in fact my father, who’s coming to his first fashion show tonight, when I first said I wanted to study fashion, he was horrified [laughs].

How do you stay energized and keep inspiration flowing when creating for a brand with a history like Coach?

I think where I am (New York) certainly helps. I really believe New York is the most creative city in the world. There’s so much creative energy, amazing style, characters, just walking down the street is inspiration. And I think also not being from the U.S., not being from New York, there’s something in that; I sometimes feel like I’m working on a movie set and it keeps me alert to how fortunate I am to be in this city that is so inspiring. And it just happens to have always been Coach’s home, where it started in 1941. So it’s a great place to be inspired by what’s happening today, but also what happened in the past.

Photography courtesy of Coach

Speaking of the past, how do you go about mining Coach’s history?

We have an amazing archive. And it’s full of real samples, and they’re arranged chronologically, so you have things from the ’40s, all the way up to today. We’ve got drawers and drawers of catalogues and editorial from over the decades. I’ll go down now and wander through and see if anything jumps out, and sometimes an individual piece will become the starting point for something. And sometimes I’ll reference it very directly. Or sometimes it might be a combination of colours, or it sparks a memory of something. It’s amazing to have that resource. But what’s great is you never know where it’s going to take you.

You’ve been the creative mind behind quite a lot of It bags. How does it feel to see those designs walking down the street on someone’s arm?

Oh, it’s one of the best things about what I do! When we were all in lockdown not so long ago, and I was kind of trying to figure out my place in the world and I was like, Why would anyone care about fashion right now when there’s so many bigger things happening in our lives?, it actually brought me back to what I love most about fashion. And I realized that actually, it brings joy and, at its best, it makes people happy. It makes them feel more confident walking into a room, it just gives them that spark when they leave the front door.

On TikTok, I see the Pillow Tabby on someone Gen Z; I remember buying my first Coach bag more than 20 years ago. How do you approach designing for multiple generations?

Honestly, I’m most inspired by the current generation and I have a fascination with youth culture, counterculture, pop culture, through history, but also very much today. I feel like the current generation, or sometimes we call it the “next generation,” really establish what’s going to come next. And I think all of us, whatever age we are, are very inspired by that.

Today’s generation is dramatically changing the way that I think about so many things, not just fashion. And sometimes it’s challenging because sometimes they are challenging things you’ve established that you feel comfortable with. But it’s really vital to listen and to think about what they’re saying. And I think we’re all, in fact, then influenced by that.

The dress code was “modern red carpet,” the cocktails were flowing and the supermodels were working the step and repeat at FASHION’s The Ones 2023.

To celebrate our September 2023 issue starring Coco Rocha, Kirsten Owen, Irina Lăzăreanu, Jessica Stam and Winnie Harlow, and mark the start of festival season, FASHION hosted its inaugural The Ones party on September 9 at the Lillian Massey building at 157 Bloor Street West, the historic location in Toronto’s Mink Mile that famously housed Club Monaco for more than 20 years.

Photography by George Pimentel

The Ones 2023 brought together more than 500 of Canada’s most stylish and influential fashion industry guests, from designers and artists to supermodels Coco Rocha, Kirsten Owen and Irina Lăzăreanu for an evening of immersive brand activations, Champagne, cocktails, canapés — and a rollicking dance party.

After walking the black carpet and grabbing a welcome glass of Taittinger Champagne, guests who wanted to live their best supermodel life could visit the Kilian Paris Discovery Bar to sample fragrances and pose at the Don’t Be Shy photo booth. Next, a stop into the Tiffany & Co. salon was all but mandatory, and made it hard to resist trying on elegant pieces from iconic collections including various styles from the Lock Collection. All that posing make you hungry? Partygoers were invited to indulge at a fresh Oyster Bar + Prawn Cocktail station, or in the bite-sized steak tartare, caviar-topped blini or mushroom vol au vent being offered throughout.

Photography by George Pimentel

Across the way, guests were encouraged to check out the Philosophy Skincare bar + photo booth featuring Dose of Wisdom, the bouncy skin reactivating serum, where they could sample products and indulge in another stylish photo opp.

Bevies flowed throughout The Ones’ chic venue including cocktails from the World Class Canada Bar, wine from Henry of Pelham, cold ones from Peroni, mocktails by Seedlip and ice-cold sparkling water from Perrier. All through the historic building, luxe contemporary floral arrangements from May Flowers added the finishing touches to the event’s elevated vibe.

Photography by George Pimentel

Finally, partygoers could make their way down to the lower level dance party where a giant disco ball sparkled and DJ Karim Olen Ash turned out hit after hit to an energetic dance floor bathed in pink light. There, Canada’s most fashionable boogied in their modern red carpet looks that included sparkly minis, sheer slips, silky gowns and strong-shouldered power suits fit for a runway. The competition was intense, but best-dressed of the evening would have to be a three-way tie between supermodels Coco Rocha in a graphic Greta Constantine gown, Kirsten Owen in a cool oversized grey velvet blazer by Maria Karimi and Irina Lăzăreanu in a sleek suit by Édito Simons. Honorable mentions go to CAFA nominee Dorian Who in a textured co-ord set and thigh-high latex boots and Olympic gold medalist Tessa Virtue in a striking red suit.

Check out the gallery below where we’ve rounded up all the most memorable fashion from The Ones 2023, along with a look at the stunning venue, immersive activations and our gift bag packed with goodies from Kilian Paris, Philosophy, NARS Makeup, Clarins Beauty, Uber, May Flowers and Belif.

Special thanks to the following:

Kilian Paris, Tiffany & Co., Uber, Philosophy, World Class Canada, Taittinger Brut Réserve Champagne, Tanqueray No. Ten Gin, Seedlip, Henry of Pelham, Peroni Nastro Azzurro, Perrier Water, NARS Makeup, Clarins Beauty, elle cuisine and May Flowers.

When you tell people you grew up in Montreal and moved away (in my case to Toronto nine years ago), the common reaction is “why would you leave??” Montreal, after all, is a charming European-feeling city of infinite delights. A small town vibe in a big city package, where love of art, food, drink and nightlife permeates every corner. It’s a place where your urban teenage years and rollicking early twenties fly by in a blur of summer fireworks, downtown bars, and dizzy dance floors, memories lodged in your psyche like wads of Bubblicious stuck to Seattle’s Gum Wall.

RELATED: Stylish Travel Gear That’ll Make the Journey Less Stressful

But it’s also a city where, if you spend a few decades, you’re likely to also collect some battle wounds. Quebec’s slogan is “Je Me Souviens,” meaning “I remember,” and despite years of joy, freedom and growth, and Montreal’s elysian reputation, there were some moments I’d rather forget.

That’s why, after almost 10 years of being away and at least twice as many visits to ailing parents that felt like, well, work, I resolved to return with my fiancé Dustin and toddler son Oslo in tow and just enjoy it. To reclaim some of the magic that was lost in the years since I left, my mission started in Old Montreal, which was the last place I lived before my great escape. A tourist mecca, it’s busy, sure, but also inarguably oozing with charm. I booked as few obligations as possible in an effort to slow down. Meander. Eat. Sit. Sip. Sleep. Repeat. It was, in a word, divine. I spent a few days in my old city with my new family, the one I created for myself, and visited with the ones I left behind. A sweet birthday brunch with old friends, a visit to my dad, and a beautiful dinner all punctuated the mostly itinerary-free sojourn.

After a few nights of delightful tourist leisure, I left my old hometown behind and returned to Toronto with new memories instead of anxiety about the old. You can’t ever truly go home again, but you can find a welcoming spot to rest your head before returning to your new one. Here are some of my Montreal faves.

The superior neighbourhood: Old Montreal

Photography courtesy of Rose PR

As mentioned, the decision to stay in Old Montreal was not a random one. It was the last place I lived in the city before relocating to Toronto and while I relished living in a classic converted loft in the heart of the neighbourhood, I longed to experience it like a visitor. And it didn’t disappoint (except for when my toddler would break loose and from my grip and run like an escaped prisoner into throngs of people). From the charm of the cobblestone streets stunning European architecture and the stunning views to the array of restaurants, cafes and cute shops (all within walking distance), it really can’t be beat.

Pro tip: Factor the cost into your travel budget and park your car in a lot or do valet at your hotel. The stress of trying to find and keep street parking simply isn’t worth it.

The chic hotel: William Gray

Photography courtesy of William Gray

Where to begin on this magical property? From the outside, the Hotel William Gray looks like an 1800s cottage meets a modern hotel (in fact, the property is comprised of two 18th-century stone homes topped with a sleek glass tower) and inside, the amenities are unparalleled. There are countless tricked out lounge areas for chatting, drinking or getting some work in. There’s a sleek pool in the summer and an outdoor patio with fireplaces and comfy Muskoka chairs. There’s a rooftop patio with insane unobstructed views of the waterfront. There’s an onsite restaurant, Maggie Oakes, with sleek wood booths and one of the best pain au chocolat I’ve ever had. Plus, the rooms themselves are superior in every way, from the deliciously cozy king-size beds to the Le Labo toiletries. (Did Dustin fill his Dopp kit with Santal 33 minis? I’ll never tell.)

Pro tip: Make time for a gorgeous glass of Prosecco at Maggie Oakes before heading to your dinner plans. Slide into one of the metallic barstools at the pristine marble bar — santé!

The iconic coffee shop: Café Olimpico

A post shared by Café Olimpico (@cafeolimpico)

Ah, Café Olimpico. The OG location in Montreal’s Mile End where I once lived is such an institution that you almost invite the anxiety that waiting in its intimidating line causes. Will I place my coffee order quickly and succinctly enough? Will the slightly stern but secretly sweet barista behind the counter even notice me? If I come here daily for two years, will I finally be treated like a regular? The Old Port outpost, located conveniently within the William Gray hotel, is smaller (and ridiculously cute) but still offers the same superior espresso Olimpico is known for. They get extremely busy but the line moves quickly and the staff at this location is very friendly.

Pro tip: Get the lemon cake. Don’t ask questions.

Check out more of the best hotspots in our Montreal travel guide here:

The ideal spot for extended stays: Warwick Le Crystal

If space and comfort are what you’re after, Warwick Le Crystal (formerly Hotel Le Crystal, which was the city’s only independently owned five-star hotel) is a must-visit. Recently acquired by Warwick Hotels & Resorts, this downtown location can’t be beat and its oversized rooms are perfect for longer stays or family vacations. Every single suite in the hotel features a kitchenette and king-sized bed, and fun fact: many of the suites have attached balconies. One particularly stunning penthouse suite features not one but two oversized balconies (one on either side of the living area), while another suite boasts a terrace that is larger than most one-bedroom apartments in Toronto. Everything’s bigger in Texas Montreal, it turns out.

The lush spa: Guerlain Spa at Four Seasons Montreal

Skin in need of a boost before we head into cooler temperatures? Get yourself to the Guerlain Spa located in Four Seasons Montreal, stat. Offering luxury treatments like facials, massages and body treatments, you’ll leave feeling rejuvenated and ready to take on the long, blistering winter season. (Er, as ready as you can be.)

The cute cocktail bar: Knox Taverne

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Knox Taverne (@knoxmtl)

Fancy a cocktail? Knox Taverne will hit the spot. Serving up creative cocktails and an excellent wine list (not to mention delicious sharable plates, if you want to nibble) in a cozy setting, you won’t want to leave this intimate Pointe St. Charles hangout spot. Come for the sips and bites; stay for the décor (gorgeous herringbone floors, plants and string lights galore).

The can’t-miss restaurant: Damas

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Damas (@damasrestaurant)

Serving up authentic Syrian flavours in a lush setting (think jewel-toned lanterns and dark polished wood), Damas offers an unforgettable dining experience. It’s no wonder the restaurant was named one of the best places to eat in Canada.

The quintessential Old Port hotel: Auberge du Vieux-Port

With waterfront views of the St. Lawrence river, exposed brick walls and original wooden floors that creak just the right amount, the Auberge du Vieux-Port offers the most authentic Euro-inspired experience. The charm of this 19th century property, comprised of two converted warehouses, is unbeatable but its hotel amenities are decidedly modern and luxe. Think: a wrought-iron bed straight out of Jane Eyre, but with a cloud-like king-size mattress. Did I mention the bathroom is spacious and the soaker tub is big enough for two? (In my case, me and my toddler — and his bath toys.) For the ultimate night in, grab a cheeky cocktail in their wildly cozy lobby lounge, complete with roaring fireplace, and then get Italian takeout from Jacopo just around the corner to keep the chill vibes going. The mushroom risotto is unmatched.

There was no shortage of viral moments at the 2023 Video Music Awards — are NSYNC reuniting? Did Justin Timberlake and Megan Thee Stallion argue backstage?! — but the buzz was surely loudest on the VMA red carpet 2023 where the fashion overshadowed all the rest.

Megan Thee Stallion (who seemed to clear the air on her possible JT feud on social media) made a triumphantly sexy return to the spotlight at the 2023 Video Music Awards. One month after Tory Lanez was sentenced to 10 years in prison for her July 2020 shooting, the American rapper walked the VMA red carpet 2023 in a black sheer corset gown by Brandon Blackwood, accessorized with a statement diamond choker by Jacob And Co. And the 28-year-old wasn’t the only musician to opt for a sultry black moment — behold Canadian treasure Nelly Furtado who shimmied down the red carpet in a body-skimming, long-sleeve gown with a dangerously low back. The 44-year-old “Maneater” was ravishing in the Dundas gown which was complemented by a soft bronzed glam.

Elsewhere on the VMAs 2023 pink carpet, besties Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez reunited, wearing black safety-pinned Versace and red lace Oscar de la Renta, respectively. Pop star of the moment Olivia Rodrigo was there as well, donning a disco ball dress by fashion darling Ludovic de Saint Sernin and Swarovski that was covered in 150,000 Swarovski crystals. According to Swarovski, the couture look was hand-sewn in Paris and took 38 hours to create.

It’s the most stylish time of the year: Fashion month, baby! And you know what that means: street style outfit inspiration as far as the Loewe balloon sunglasses-covered eyes can see. Starting off strong with the Spring 2024 shows in New York, we’re seeing some NYFW street style trends emerge from the jump including fall’s biggest trend, pops of red, seen on everything from shoes and handbags to easy day dresses and silky tops.

Elsewhere, maxi-skirts are still popular, iterated in ankle-grazing denim, sporty parachute silhouettes and cargo styles. The shoe du jour is undoubtedly flat, seen in classic ballet and trendy Mary Jane versions, while the denim is decidedly loose, wide and relaxed. Aside from red, we’re noticing interesting shots of yellow, in hues ranging from butter cream to marigold, not to mention a fresh green that could be described as somewhere between celery and peridot.

Hiding in plain site among the NYFW street style brigade were some of the usual Big Apple A-list celebrity attendees, including Jennifer Lopez, Gabrielle Union and Julianne Moore who donned their glam Americana best to take in the Ralph Lauren show,

September is a magical time, isn’t it? There’s that “back to school” feeling you get no matter what your age (or actual academic reality), a sense of renewal, a fresh start! You know what isn’t always fresh? The weather. I don’t know who has us all convinced that we can become fall girlies immediately after Labour Day weekend, but I’m here to remind you that summer temps continue well through the month of September in most Canadian cities. Who among us hasn’t worn a perfect fall dress to a Thanksgiving weekend wedding and almost passed out from heat exhaustion?

In fact, cities like Toronto bracing for a post-Labour Day heat wave, so take this as your sign to keep your tall boots and chunky knits in storage until October 1 when PSL season really starts.

Until then, you know what slaps in the late summer/early fall? Linen. It’s breezy, breathable, looks elevated and pairs beautifully with lightweight knits (if you must). And yes, ICYWW, it really is as sweat-proof as your mom told you it is — I would know. I, self-proclaimed Sweaty Gal, did the leg work and wore some of the most popular Reformation linen pieces on steaming hot days so that you wouldn’t have to.

Without further ado, a round-up of the top transitional linen pieces that’ll take you from the summer well into fall.

The white mini-dress

Sweat score: 1/10. The dress is lined, which is fab for ensuring it isn’t see-through, but does add an extra layer.

Most likely to: Get a second date. (And look extremely adorable with a retro headband and boxy cardigan.)

Pros: Sometimes Ref minis can run a tad *too* mini on taller gals. Not this cutie that hits at just the right spot mid-thigh.

Cons: That I can’t wear it daily?

How to make it fall-ready: Take the “wrong shoe theory” for a spin and add a pair of loafers and white socks.

The coastal grandma drawstring pants

Sweat score: 1/10. They sit deceptively high on the waist, so there’s a slight chance of perspiring around the mid-section.

Most likely to: Dig for clams on the beach in Maine. (Or watch any film starring Diane Keaton.)

Pros: I was worried these pants would be so flimsy, they’d feel like a beach coverup but the weight of the linen is surprisingly substantial, yet not heavy.

Cons: The online reviews are right — these loose linen trousers do run quite long.

How to make it fall-ready: A pair of mesh flats and an oversized blazer take these babies from vacation patio to city sidewalk.

The Sofia Loren dress

Sweat score: 3/10. The combination of a fitted bodice and cinched waist means the girls can get a bit, um, more glowy when temperatures soar.

Most likely to: Eat pasta in Capri with a stunning Aperol Spritz in hand.

Pros: She hugs your curves in all the right places.

Cons: Her straps run a wee bit long.

How to make it fall-ready: The trick to transitioning a summery silhouette to early fall lies in the shoes and the handbag. In this case, swap your basket tote for a leather shoulder bag and opt for a pair of closed-toe Mary Janes in lieu of sandals.

The workhorse white shirt

Sweat score: 0/10. No sweat, no notes!

Most likely to: Work with just about everything, from over a bikini in the summer to tucked into your favourite pair of vintage jeans come fall.

Pros: It’s roomy enough to feel modern but still cut to skim the body so it isn’t billowy or overwhelming.

Cons: That I don’t own it in every colour.

How to make it fall-ready: Once Labour Day is in your rearview, make a breezy linen button-down feel fall-ish by wearing it as you would any other cotton dress shirt — think: tucked into a silk slip skirt or under a leather blazer. The contrast of textures feels instantly elevated.

Copenhagen Fashion Week has cemented itself as one of the most exciting on the fashion calendar. From the charming Scandinavian street style parading down the sidewalks to the forward-thinking, innovative and sustainability-minded designers showing on the runways, Copenhagen’s is the little fashion week that could. Just look to cool Danish brands like Ganni, Stine Goya, Saks Potts, and Rotate Birger Christensen for proof. And while these established labels have paved the way, Copenhagen’s new and emerging designers are offering fresh perspectives on the Scandi aesthetic, not to mention carrying the torch of sustainability that’s become emblematic of the Danish capital’s fashion scene.

Take the most recent Spring 2024 season — according to Forbes, at least half of the collections presented were required to be made from recycled or upcycled materials, and those designs were brimming with creativity. From over-the-top pattern mixing and interesting asymmetrical creations to futuristic takes on classic tailoring, many of the collections shown at CPHFW Spring 2024 were as innovative and memorable as the exciting outfits seen on the streets. Here are five things we can’t stop thinking about from Copenhagen Fashion Week Spring 2024.

Inclusivity done right

Amid the mosaic of trends to come from the Scandi city, no theme was more apparent than diversity — spanning age, gender, and ability. There was a defiant subversion of male power dressing at Latimmier, with shredded-up deconstructed suits, sheer tops, and lingerie-clad drag queen Anna Conda closing the show. In contrast, Paolina Russo’s collection felt like a utopian feminine fairytale, notably featuring models who are older, who don plus-size clothes, and who use prosthetic limbs. This inclusivity was continued at OpéraSport, where more mature models sported sexier styles by forgoing bras and ditching pants. In a time when runways are reportedly becoming less inclusive, this kind of representation at the bona fide cool-girl capital undoubtedly leaves a lasting industry effect.

The all-red outfit we can’t stop thinking about

This image will live rent-free in mind until I acquire the pieces to recreate it (and an event to wear it to). Saucy, energetic and bold, from the slinky dress paired with the oversized blazer to the rosette-covered heels. Add on simple makeup and a perfect blowout that Sofia Richie Grainge would approve of and classic black sunnies — 10 out of 10, no notes. And the emergence of passionate red as the next It colour after Barbie pink (more on that in a minute) is no surprise. From the Fall 2023 collections of Tory Burch and Prabal Gurung at NYFW to Saks Potts and Ganni at CPHFW, one of the biggest trends from last fashion month was that red is the new pink, and the message is gleefully received.

Danish designers are experts in elevated quiet luxury

If you’re looking for impossibly cool, tailored separates with an overall relaxed vibe, the Scandi designers just get it. Take Herskind, the mother-daughter brand, that consistently delivers concise collections that feel simultaneously timeless and trend-forward. Their CPHFW Spring 2024 collection expanded on this expertise with elevated capsule pieces including modern suiting, cool trench coats and innovative takes on classic tailoring, like this oversized, belt-free coat and the double vest above.

Another label to watch at Copenhagen Fashion Week Spring 2024 in the world of luxurious yet accessible wardrobe essentials was The Garment. Charlotte Eskildsen and Sophia Roe’s Copenhagen-based brand, beloved for its knitwear and tailoring, presented an assortment of fresh spring staples. Standouts included a modern off-the-shoulder black dress and yes, another vest, this time a lush charcoal knit version with asymmetrical buttons.

Barbiecore isn’t over yet

In the Year of Barbie, pink has been having more than a moment. (If you’ve seen the film in theatres, you know the unofficial uniform is all-pink everything.) And although the saturated pink trend started years ago with Valentino’s Fall 2022 collection, if the Copenhagen street style is any indication, the colour du jour shows so sign of slowing all the down just yet. Outside the Spring 2024 shows, we saw Barbie pink in all its glory — and in every possible iteration. From voluminous Cecile Bahsen-like silhouettes and #GanniGirl streetwear to silk slip skirts, it’s clear that for the foreseeable future, we’re all still Barbie girls.

Sustainability as more than a marketing tactic

As far as taking climate responsibility and conscious design seriously, Copenhagen Fashion Week consistently proves its walking the (Scandi-chic) walk, with many calling it the world’s most sustainable fashion week. Since CPHFW became the first to enforce sustainability criteria in 2020, it has imposed minimum thresholds that participants have to meet in order to show their wares. CEO Cecilie Thorsmark told Forbes: “A major milestone was our sustainability requirements coming into effect this February 2023, which means that all brands on the official show schedule of Copenhagen Fashion Week are met by mandatory minimum standards that they must document.” And those sustainability standards will be ramped up on an annual basis, according to British Vogue, to “ensure that brands are continuously striving to do better, as well as reflecting wider changes within the industry, such as EU legislation coming down the pipeline.”

One brand that has embraced these standards is conceptual knitwear label A. Roge Hove whose founder Amalie Røge Hove told the publication: “The minimum standards have made us undertake a range of initiatives to improve our sustainable practices, and helped us set goals for those areas we have worked less with, supporting us to stay on the right path and keeping our focus on what’s important. It has also helped to establish a common language in the industry, especially in the Nordics, for what goals we are running towards, and striving to achieve together.” And they sure look stylish doing it.
